Welcome to Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church

Everyone is welcome at Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church. We are inclusive. That means ALL people are welcome. If you come to worship here or participate in the active life of our community, we hope to offer a spirit of welcome to you.

While you don’t need to know anything in particular to visit, you might find some basic information helpful in advance of visiting. If you don’t find what you are looking for give us a call at 313-822-3456. We want to be hospitable.

Join us for Worship at 10:30am

During the July and August there is a second, brief and casual service of worship on Sunday mornings at 8:30am in Zaun Chapel.

Getting Help When You Visit

If you have questions or need support finding your way, speak with the "Elder of the Day" who sits at a table in the Main Foyer of the church. S/he can be helpful.

What to Wear

We invite you to come as you are. You’ll find a range of attire among the church. Some people prefer dresses, or a jacket and tie. There are even a few suits. Our pastor wears a robe. There are some who prefer jeans and a polo. Most people are somewhere in the middle; casual but neatly dressed. Presence is valued more than attire. Come in a fashion that makes you comfortable.

The church has a secure parking lot behind the building with two attendants. Park where you find space. Street parking is also available along Burns and Fischer.

Entering the Church Building

There are several entrances to the church. You'll see a walkway from the parking lot to the left side of the building. Access to the sanctuary is available near Jefferson Avenue around from the front of the church at the "Narthex Entrance." You may also enter the "Tower Entrance" which are the double doors at the foot of the church building's tower.

We are challenged with an old building and we continue to work toward an accessible building. We and our building are a work in progress. Wheelchairs will find easiest access to the sanctuary (without stairs) using the Tower or Narthex Entrances.

Children in Worship

Children are welcome and encouraged to experience worship. We understand that children have different needs. Worship bags are available to help children learn in tactile ways with activity sheets and other resources. You can find them in the Tower Entryway (the doors found left of the pulpit).

Nursery and Child Care from 10:15am to Noon

Childcare is available on Sunday mornings from 10:15 to Noon. There is (of course) no cost. We offer a safe, loving, and welcoming environment for all children and their parents. We have a paid nursery supervisor in addition to volunteers. The nursery is located on the second floor accessed using the tower staircases.

During worship, children up to grade 5 are offered church school, an alternative for those who do not wish to remain in worship. Church School is by our Christian Educator Kathy Chateau with dedicated church members. The children hear a story, sing, dance, have a snack, pray, and play.

Coffee and Fellowship at 11:45am

Following worship, everyone is invited to share coffee and conversation in Dodge Hall. Have a cup of coffee, a cookie or two, and enjoy the company of church friends.
